Investment and innovation at R Collard recognised by industry specialist

Demolition and waste management company, R Collard Limited, has been shortlisted in two of the categories for this year’s Sustainability and Resource Awards organised by the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM).

The first category, Most Sustainable Construction and Demolition Project Award, recognises the exemplary approach that the company took in the demolition of the former manufacturing facility at Thales in Gatwick. Identifying some of the structural steelwork  as suitable for re-use in the construction of R Collard’s new Materials Recycling Facility, 800 tonnes of 25m length steel beams were cleaned and cut to specification, re-painted and transported to their Eversley yard to provide structural steelwork for the roof.  They were able to apply best practice in waste management to push materials higher up the Hierarchy of Waste from “recycling” to a more environmentally desirable category “re-use” and demonstrate full chain of custody and a case study of the circular economy in action.

The second category, Award for Demonstrating Project Innovation, acknowledges the major investment that R Collard has made in a state-of-the-art recycling facility at its Hampshire headquarters. The £2.5 million facility will provide a local source of high-grade recycled aggregate products 12 months of the year to enhance the efficiency and environmental performance of regional construction and civil engineering developments in the South of England.  The installation was specified and project managed by Terex Washing Systems distributor, Duo Plc and has an annual production capacity of up to 300,000 tonnes.  It brings an advanced, effective and efficient approach to the Recycled Aggregates Industry, incorporating the very latest technology to enhance the quality and efficiency of the recycling process whilst significantly reducing the cost, fuel consumption and carbon footprint of supplying recycled aggregate to a number of key developments in the UK.

“We are delighted to have been shortlisted in two categories in these prestigious awards,” says Managing Director, Robert Collard.  “It rewards the hard work and commitment of the whole firm over what has been an intense twelve months.  I was determined to make our 20th anniversary year a landmark and one to be remembered and I feel we have achieved this even before the award event itself in November.”

“We’ve had the best ever response to our awards this year. It may be that necessity really is the mother of invention as all types of businesses look for better resources management to support the bottom line or business continuity and to protect people and the environment. There is a great spirit of innovation in resource management and it deserves to be recognised. I wish good luck to all of this year’s entrants and want even more next year!”  Steve Lee, Chief Executive, CIWM.

The CIWM Sustainability and Resource Awards are well-respected within the industry and given for outstanding achievement at a waste management facility. Now in their ninth year, these awards are well established and include many well-known and respected names as former winners. The winners for 2015 will be announced at the award ceremony on 5 November at the Marriot Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), is the professional body which represents over 7,000 waste professionals working in the sustainable resources and wastes management sectors- predominantly in the UK but also overseas. CIWM sets the professional standards for individuals working in the industry.
